Jillian’s October 1 Post: Here’s to “Take Back Your Time” Day

Hooray! Several groups have formed recently to help us slow down and savor life more fully. Their events include “Ready, Set, Relax! Night” in Ridgewood, New Jersey and “Family Focus Night” in Poway, California. For the past four years, a Seattle-based organization has promoted October 24 as a day to “Take Back Your Time.” I salute them.

Even Rachel Ray, in her new TV show, encourages us to “take back our weekend.” She says, “I’m going to get in my car and make all left-hand turns and see where it takes me. I want to go places I’ve never been before… I love getting myself lost. That’s an adventurous way to take back the weekend.”

In writing Change Your Life Through Travel, I met many people who had discovered the joy and power of slowing down and living in the moment. To help commemorate “Take Back Your Time Day,” I wanted to share a couple of tips from Change Your Life Through Travel, to, hopefully, help inspire others who seek to “take back their time” on this day.

  1. Slow down with a “Sensuality Day” and surround yourself with elements you love: favorite foods, wines, books, music, clothes, friends or stories to share.
  2. Be a writer for a day. Savor all of your senses one at a time. Delight in creating comparisons to discover new ways to experience a trip to the store or a journey across town.
